Catfish Alley in Las Vegas Building a Good Reputation

I discovered Catfish Alley via Yelp in October 2008 when it was a new restaurant. The name immediately evoked my interest because I associate it with my childhood. I lived in the Tenderloin district in San Francisco for a few years during elementary school. We were poor so it was a happy day when Mom brought us to the corner store for fried catfish. I remember whiffing the smell blocks away anticipating the treat. Since "catfish" was the restaurant's name it BETTER be some awesome southern grub. I was right.

We had a feast the first time around ordering everything off the menu. The catfish was fried to perfection in a crunchy but not overbearing cornmeal crust and without a drop of oil in sight. The okra, collard greens, fried mac n cheese, fried corn fritters, hush puppies and oysters were all delicious and light. Even though 99% of the items were fried there was no greasy aftertaste.

Fast forward 6 months later with a recent glowing review from the local Las Vegas Review Journal; Catfish Alley is now very busy. They offer a $5 special which includes 2 pieces of catfish, a side and hush puppies. They now have a bus girl/waitress working the floor and a new condiment; a cocktail sauce with freshly grated horseradish.

The quality has not changed since day one and the staff is cheerful and friendly. The owner even walked the floor to greet his customers and ask about the meal. THIS is a fast food joint so the gesture was much appreciated! We told him we came all the way from San Francisco to eat here and he was grinning from ear to ear. This place is not to be missed.

They just launched Rib Tuesdays, it's a shame I didn't stay long enough to try their ribs. I will update the review once I'm back in the City of Sin.
