Breakfast is NOT the most important meal…well as least for us night owls….. I, however, do love the whole breakfast ritual of pancakes, eggs, hot coffee and fresh newspaper smell. The Big Eats 100 List has three breakfast meals: Ella’s, Zazie, and Pastores, each very different.
Zazie is located in a small, quaint, cute neighborhood close to UCSF (why did I mention UCSF? because this place is brimming with doctors loudly discussing their work.) The restaurant is a little country, and a little rock and roll. The spiral staircase, back patio and retail storefront windows with a VIP view of ACE Hardware plays into the whole experience.
Everything on the menu is organic from the free-range chicken eggs to coffee which means the prices are higher than say, Bashful Bull’s box mixes but the prices are very reasonable for the quality.
The menu offers 7 different eggs benedicts. #77 on the Big 100 Eats is eggs benedicts on the back patio, Monaco: prosciutto and tomato provencales eggs Benedict. The format at Zazie is 1/2/3 eggs with the according prices. I like how one can control the portion size depending on the hunger factor. Each dish is served with home fries, nice and crispy with the added flavor of whole unpeeled roasted garlic. The hollandaise sauce was light and just enough poured over the eggs to highlight the meal.
One of the special of the day was baked polenta in a cask iron with cheese, tomato, spinach and chicken sausage and over easy eggs. The cheesy polenta greasiness is cut by the fresh tomato and spinach.
My morning was off to a good start with a organic non fat milk latte equipped with a darling heart served in a bowl (my favorite way to enjoy caffeine.)

Apparently, Irma from Pastores is famous for her Chiliquiles with fried egg. The sweet lady, Irma is what makes this small, unnoticeable restaurant stand out. Really. If you are driving normally, abiding the law with hands on the 10 and 2 o’clock position and eyes focused on the road, you will miss Pastores. The restaurant has a looong hallway entrance before you reach the open kitchen with Irma behind the counter.
What’s not to love about #78 Chiliquiles with fried eggs? Hot, oily crispy strips of tortilla smothered with queso and sour cream. Served with two fried eggs still bearing the gooey yolk and well seasoned and non gritty or fibrous black beans. The homemade green salsa brings to together the dish with the tangy, mild spicy and thick consistency. Texture galore.
