Distance and Time with Coffee and Brownies

Four Barrels in San Francisco - Latte with dynamo spiced chocolate donut

A Caffe Latte, non-fat milk, no foam and extra hot. And three brownie bites…

The complicated coffee order at Starbucks with distance and time gave me a love story I will never forget and maybe never experience again. Storybook fairy tales are full of whimsical lollipops, sugarplums and cotton candy clouds but chocolate and caffeine are real life.

Once upon a time a boy met a girl who just finished picking up the pieces of her heart. She only wanted one thing.

Trust. He gave it to her.

They talked on the phone for over six months, shared stories, blabbed about randomness and laughed. She was hesitant to develop a relationship beyond the phone calls. He told her no matter how long it takes he will wait, it took her distance and time…

Almost every morning, driving over 70 miles he left her a hot cup of coffee and three brownie bites at her doorstep.

She took the coffee and brownies and walked toward El Camino Real which lead to the Golden Gate Bridge. There is nothing better in this world then walking alone toward the gleaming structure through the misty cold thick fog with a steaming cup of coffee and thoughts.

Distance and time between him and her got closer.

*Alicia Key's Distance and Time song inspired me to write this story. I'm fond of her quote, "everybody's a lover, everybody..." She sang a beautiful emotional live version for her YouTube Live Concert. Click here.

**This post is dedicated to all of the soldiers fighting the war who are separated from their love ones. No matter what politic position one has with the war, my heart goes out to the soldiers.

One Christmas, I was in a Costal town in Oregon buying smoked salmon from a local mom and pop cannery. The owner, a mother told me her son was in Iraq and she was sending him a care package with canned salmon and cookies. I hope they are celebrating this Christmas together as a family.

Cute story. Even though I've lived in SF for 13 years I never tire of seeing the GG Bridge, and if it's a foggy day, even better. Like your blog, I will be back.
