#5 Katana-Ya – 100 Things you must try before you die in SF list

I finally made it out to Katana-Ya (KY). KY’s chasu ramen is #5 on 7x7 Magazine 100 Things you must try before you in San Francisco list.  I’ve been told countless times by friends how it’s “SO GOOD” and it’s the best ramen in town.  KY is tiny and by tiny it’s feels like the size of a home living room. A small bar with about 5 seats and small 2 and 4 top tables, and by small the 4 top tables should really be for 2 people.

KY is located in downtown across the A.C.T theatre and is always busy during lunch and dinner. They are opened everyday until 1:15 am. There was a steady tickle of customers at 10:30 pm on a Wednesday night.

I ordered the soy sauce broth chasu ramen ($1.40 extra to make it spicy) I passed even though I need spice in my life but at $9.50 I thought it was already too expensive. The bowl arrives with 3 pieces of thick cut chasu, bamboo shoots, green onions and seaweed. The ramen noodles are straight not the curly kind, portions are not really huge because I could eat 2 bowls. I actually liked the cold ramen better.

I also ordered the ankimo (monk fish liver) at $8.50 for 4 pieces when yesterday I had 6 pieces of ankimo for $6.50 at Gochi Japanese Fusion in Cupertino, CA. I guess they need to pay the downtown rent. First disappointment in the list and the waitress was smirking at us when we were ordering and not in the good way…

I thought the broth was greasy and off tasting. Unpleasant and very disappointing.

I agree I've had better at Genki and it's not one of the better places for ramen.

I just tried this, also found from 100 things list in SF for 2010 and tried their Katanaya Ramen entree. My favorite part was the noodles. Soup was okay, but menu clearly states that MSG is added.
